Happiness Tip: Stop Worrying about What Other People Think of You

Happiness Tip: Stop Worrying about What others Think of You

Do you sometimes feel like you’re still in high school worrying about what others may think of you? One of the first steps in freeing yourself from this trap is to learn to let go of the fear of judgment and know that you’ll only be happy if you live your life the way YOU want to live it. Choose your own goals, activities and actions and don’t get caught up in taking on other peoples’ likes and dislikes. Be comfortable with who you are and know that you are making the right decisions, regardless of what other people may believe.

While it’s important to be open to advice and the constructive opinions of your close family and friends, trying to please everyone will only burden you and ultimately not lead to anyone’s happiness.

Remember: What makes you unique is what makes you beautiful. Stay in the present, live your life without regrets, and do what makes you happy.

Have you ever gotten caught in the trap of worrying what other people think about you? How have you freed yourself from it? Let me know in the comments!

5 Happy Habits to Practice Every Day

happy habits, happy, habits

Have you taken control of your happiness? Happiness comes from altering your habits and your way of thinking. Here are 5 habits that will help you stay happy:

1. Meditate – Do you want to be more calm, peaceful, and happy? Meditation reduces tension & stress, builds self confidence, enhances energy, reduces anxiety, and so much more.

2. Read or Watch Something Funny – While the science of laughter is in its early stages, we do know that laughter triggers healthy physical changes in the body like strengthening your immune system, diminishing pain, and boosting your energy.

3. Pet an Animal – Research by Psychology Today indicates that pets provide meaningful social support for owners. They found consistent evidence that pet owners exhibited greater self-esteem, were less lonely, and were less fearful than non owners. Even if you don’t have your own animal, petting someone else’s animal can help ease your stress.

4. Practice an Act of Kindness – Pay for the person’s coffee behind you, give someone a compliment, lend someone your umbrella, smile at a stranger, give a happy note…The possibilities are endless. Two recent studies suggest that giving to others makes us happy – even happier than spending on ourselves!

5. Talk to a Friend – Happier people tend to have supportive relationships with their family and friends. Professor Toni Antonucci says “Relationships help people feel that they’re worthy, that they are capable, that they can set goals and accomplish them, and that they can control their life.”

Do you practice any of these happy habits? What other habits have you adopted that you’ve found make you happy? Let me know in the comments!

Happiness Tip: Find Your Passion

Find Your Passion

Happiness tip: Find Your Passion

I know, I know…Finding your passion is easier said than done. Some lucky people know what their passion is from an early age, but most have to work to figure it out. When you find your passion, you are not just happier yourself, but your passion becomes contagious and inspires others to find their own passion. One of my favorite quotes about passion is “When we focus on leading a passionate, meaningful life, we are also inadvertently creating a spectacular ripple effect of inspiration in the lives around us.  When one person follows a dream, tries something new, or takes a daring leap, everyone nearby feels their passionate energy; and before too long, they are making their own daring leaps while simultaneously inspiring others.”

Not sure yet what your passion is? Here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Are there certain activities that come easy to me?

2. Are there certain subjects that I gravitate towards when reading books, watching movies, etc.?

3. Do I enjoy certain activities enough to do them for extended periods of time?

4. What topics do I love to talk about and learn about?

5. What are my strengths?

Hopefully some of these questions will help guide you in finding your passion. Have you found something you’re passionate about or are you still looking? Let me know in the comments!

Spreading Happiness Through Active Listening

Spreading Happiness Through Active Listening

There are thousands of ways we can spread happiness. Often times we can make others happy by doing something we rarely give a second thought to. Do you ever have conversations where a friend is telling you a story and all the sudden you realize you are thinking about something else entirely? Maybe you started thinking about everything on your to-do list, how hungry you are, or how you forgot to call your mom this morning. Other times you might be in a conversation and thinking about what you’re going to say next without listening to what the other person is saying at that moment.

Very few master the art of active listening, but the more you focus on giving your full attention to others, the more appreciated and respected they’ll feel. You’ll realize that your connections and communication skills become stronger when you take steps towards being a better listener.

Here are some tips on how to be an active listener:

1. Look at the person talking. It sounds pretty straight forward, but turning your eyes and body to face the person will show them that you are engaged in the conversation.

2. React accordingly. Give verbal feedback when appropriate like asking them questions relevant to what they’re saying.

3. Reduce distractions. Turn down or off the radio or TV, put down your magazine, and focus on the conversation.

4. Give positive non-verbal cues. Be aware of  positive non-verbal cues you can include such as nodding your head, maintaining eye contact, or raising your eyebrows. You should also think about negative non-verbal cues you might be inadvertently sending like crossing your arms over your chest.

Do you feel like you’re an active listener? Are any of these tips helpful? Let me know in the comments!
