Huge Announcement: The Beginning of Paper Nostalgia

Have you ever heard of PostSecret where you mail in your secrets? Announcing something similar called Paper Nostalgia, where you'll send in a postcard of one of your happiest memories.

You have been doing an incredible job spreading happiness through happy notes. 10,000 happy notes have been mailed out so far!

Now it’s YOUR turn to send me a note. This note will be different from the normal happy notes. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all connect through our happiest memories?

I want you to send me homemade postcards with one of your happiest memories. Similar to PostSecret (my inspiration for this project!), you’ll send me a postcard to the mailing address below with an artistic representation (can be a photo, drawing, painting, etc.) and a sentence or two about your happy memory. The memory can be big or small – anything from a life-changing event to a realization you came to. We (hopefully) have thousands of happy memories, so feel free to send as many as you’d like. One Happster may send a postcard about seeing her child’s first steps, while another may send one about seeing a beautiful sunset.  Continue reading “Huge Announcement: The Beginning of Paper Nostalgia”

Gratitude Sunday

Gratitude Sunday

It’s time again for Gratitude Sunday! A few weeks ago I introduced this tradition because I think gratitude is so important to our happiness.

There are so many benefits of practicing gratitude, but I wanted to specifically share this one with you today: In a series of experiments in the the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, listing off all the things you are thankful for were linked with a brighter outlook on life and a greater sense of positivity.

Here are 3 things I’m grateful for today:

10 Happiness Quotes to Live By

10 happiness quotes to live by

Inspirational quotes and sayings have the power to make us think about the world differently, motivate us to change, and even put us in a good mood. I find it helpful to put happiness quotes I find impactful on my bathroom mirror, on my office bulletin board and on my Pinterest board as constant reminders to not sweat the small stuff. Here are 10 happiness quotes I love:

1. “Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness.”

2. “You alone are enough. You have nothing to prove to anybody.”

Welcome to Gratitude Sundays

Gratitude Sunday

When is the last time you thought of something you were grateful for? Often times we get caught up in what isn’t exactly perfect in our lives and forget to be thankful for what is going right.

Since it’s so easy to fall into that pattern, I decided to start a series of posts about gratitude. In the TED Talk I recently watched, Shawn Anchor suggests that you think of 3 things you’re grateful for each day. I usually do this when I wake up in the morning, but I want to take it a step further and share my gratitude with you all every Sunday. I would love for you to join me and tell me what you’re grateful for in the comments as well!
Showing gratitude is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety, depression, anger, and many more negative or “below the line” emotions.

Here are three things I’m grateful for today: Continue reading “Welcome to Gratitude Sundays”

Some Inspiration From an 8 Year Old

Having trouble letting go of something? Maybe it’s time to take the wise words of Maura, the 8 year old, into account: “Sometimes you just need to take a nap and get over it.”

Take a nap. Leave it all behind. Start fresh. Live for now.

Wishing all of you Happsters love and happiness on this beautiful Sunday!

How to Avoid Road Rage & Drive Happy

How to Avoid Road Rage & Drive Happy

Collectively, Americans spend roughly 500,000 years stuck in traffic — nearly 4.2 billion hours. That’s a lot of time in the car! If you’re like most of us, you’ve found yourself frustrated while driving a time or two. Here are some tips to help you stay happy on your commute:

1. Leave a 5-10 minute cushion for yourself. Many people get anxious in the car because they get caught in traffic and end up being late for an appointment or meeting. Avoid feeling rushed by leaving yourself a little more time than you think is necessary.

2. Listen to great music. Turn on your favorite song and take time to enjoy it. You can even sing along if you want! I know I do.

3. Check the traffic. Avoid getting caught in traffic by looking at real-time traffic updates on a site like sigalert before you leave so you can plan your route accordingly.

4. Take another mode of transportation. Whenever you can, take another mode of transportation like the bus, train or your bike. Mixing it up will allow you to notice new things, decrease your stress and meet new people.

5. Practice an act of kindness. Help make someone else’s day a little smoother by practicing an act of kindness like letting a car merge into your lane. Even if you get to your destination 30 seconds later, you’ll feel better about your commute.

6. Take the scenic route. Stray away from your regular routine and go on a mountain road or drive along the beach. It’s hard to have road rage when you’re among beautiful scenery. Just to be sure to keep your eyes on the road :).

How much time do you think you spend in the car a day? What are your favorite songs to listen to?
